When you hear the word “groundwater,” what is the first thing that comes to mind? Maybe you think of a well, or an old-fashioned tap installed in the ground. The truth is, most people don’t know how vital and important groundwater really is. It makes up a fundamental portion of our natural world, and keeps our soil fertile to grow crops. Did you know that over 50% of the world’s population relies on groundwater every single day? 40% of the water used for drinking, bathing and irrigation in the United States comes from groundwater. In Denmark, 99% of all the water used comes solely from groundwater! Since groundwater reserves are so important to the lives of all humans, it is deeply important that we protect them.
Groundwater management is becoming a bigger and bigger industry, as the climate changes and droughts are more common. We need to be increasingly aware of our farming and drilling efforts, in order to prevent these precious reserves from being contaminated and harming those who drink their water.
